Design for Change

Back in February of 2018, I was offered a spot in a fundraiser event for Coalition Against Abuse in Relationships. I was intrigued since I enjoy doing these type of good-cause events. I agreed and was told that my model for the evening was their Ambassador, Hon. Cathy Rogers, Minister of Finance for New Brunswick. I was thrilled at the prospect of designing for such an important lady!

My videographer/husband, Nick even took some behind the scenes clips for a promo video.

Design for Change

A first meeting with the organizers, Colleen Ferguson (official photographer for the event), and the Honorable Cathy Rogers was scheduled at the 4 Points by Sheraton Hotel in Moncton.

Now, I should mention that I was very sick at the time of the meeting. I caught the bug that was going around and felt awful. I even lost my voice, so my husband Nick had to do most of the conversing for me. Even as awful as I felt, I still wanted to attend the meeting personally.  I took with me many samples for Cathy to look over and took proper measurements.

I was asked to design 2 outfits for Cathy and was requested that I do one in the Design for Change pink color.

This was my final draft sketch for the pink outfit. :) I wanted it to stay classy, yet comfortable. The skirt has a flirty element, shorter in the front and a bit longer in the back with a tie around the waist.

I sent the finished sketch and measurements to East Coast Couture's seamstress, Jessica Schlarb so she could begin work on the outfit and pattern, should we decide to introduce the dress to production.

These sketches are then sent to our seamstress for pattern development and sample-making.The sample product is ready for fitting, custom made for the honorable Cathy Rogers, minister of finance for New Brunswick, Canada. The dress was designed by LeeAnn Dussault, and put together by East Coast Couture's seamstress, Jessica Schlarb.

For Cathy's second outfit, I decided on a more tailored dress of a knit grey tartan. :) I originally went with a A-line skirt, but after seeing Cathy try on the dress, we decided to make it more fitted. The fabric of the tartan just didn't fall properly for the A-line.

The honorable Cathy Rogers is pictured here wearing the knit grey tartan dress during a fitting. This dress is similar to our current grey tartan dresses available in our store. The back view of the honorable Cathy Rogers wearing the grey tartan dress, during the fitting for the Design for Change event to be held in Moncton, April 14th, 2018.

I also got an email from the event organizer asking if I’d mind dressing another of their models. I agreed, and we set up a date for a fitting. The fitting went very well, and the model LOVES her outfit! My second model will be wearing the Floral Brocade Shift  from our new Spring Collection that is now available online. :)

April rolled around, and it’s now the week of the event! A fitting with Cathy was just completed, and we only have a few minor tweaks to each outfit before the show on April 14th.

I am happy with how it’s coming together so far and looking forward to the show!

The event is from 7pm to 10pm, and tickets for the event can be purchased online through Eventbrite.

It’s going to be such a busy weekend! The Design for Change fundraiser on April 14th, then off to Saint John on April 15th for more model fittings for another upcoming show. But that’s for another blog. :P

Here is the Facebook Page for the event! Hope to see you there! Definitely come chat with me :)
